VALENCE
"Valence" refers to an entity's capacity to combine or interact, most commonly in chemistry as the combining power of an element or atom, or in psychology as the attractiveness or averseness of a situation or object. The meaning depends on the context; in chemistry, it relates to how many bonds an atom can form, while in psychology, it describes the positive or negative feeling associated with something. Don’t Believe Everything You Think, is an exhibition that explores how artists manage the universal impulse of negative self-talk through their artistic practice. Working across multiple disciplines: painting, collage, sculpture, photography, performance, video, and sound, the 14 featured artists exert concerted effort to push past, accept, or prevail over their own negative self-talk. Through the sanative process of their art—from genesis, to creation, and finally presentation—they have learned that it is best to not always believe everything you think.
